Turn your garden into a vibrant oasis

A garden in the Gulf has to cope with long, hot summers, salty water and sandy soil. The good news: a few changes make a big difference, and most of them pay for themselves in water and time saved.

1. Start with shade

A pergola, a shade sail or a row of trees on the west side cools the whole garden. Plants under light shade need less water and stay greener through August.

2. Improve the soil once

Mix compost and a little clay into sandy soil before planting. It holds water near the roots instead of letting it drain away.

3. Choose plants that like the climate

  • Bougainvillea, frangipani and hibiscus for colour
  • Date and fan palms for height
  • Native grasses and succulents for low-water beds

4. Water at the right time

Water early in the morning or after sunset, and water deeply a few times a week rather than a little every day. A drip system puts the water exactly where it is needed.

5. Mulch every bed

A 5 cm layer of bark or gravel keeps the soil cool and cuts evaporation.
